House concurrent resolution recognizing May 2025 as ProgressiveSupranuclear Palsy Awareness Month in Vermont.(H.C.R.65)Offered by Representatives Demar of Enosburgh, Berbeco of Winooski, Burditt ofWest Rutland, Critchlow of Colchester, Dickinson of St. Albans Town, Dolgin of St.Johnsbury, Galfetti of Barre Town, Gregoire of Fairfield, Labor of Morgan, Laroche ofFranklin, Luneau of St. Albans City, Morgan, L. of Milton, Oliver of Sheldon, Page ofNewport City, Powers of Waterford, Pritchard of Pawlet, Tagliavia of Corinth, Taylor ofMilton, and Toof of St. Albans TownOffered by Senator IngallsWhereas, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke,progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare onset progressive neurological disorderthat affects numerous essential physical and mental functions, andWhereas, an estimated 20,000 Americans have been diagnosed with this disorder, andthe specific symptoms are individually unique, andWhereas, PSP’s symptoms usually appear at 60 years of age or older, although insome cases earlier, and they can result in an individual becoming depressed, forgetful,and irritable and cause an individual to have sleeping challenges, andWhereas, individuals with PSP can experience severe quality-of-life issues, andcontracting this disorder can necessitate complex care requirements that negativelyimpact family relationships and the lives of caregivers, andWhereas, although outwardly similar to Parkinson’s disease, PSP is a distinct disorderthat is part of the group of disorders known collectively as atypical parkinsonism, andWhereas, at present, there is neither a cure nor even a modifying treatment, andalthough some symptoms may be managed with medication and care, the lack ofunderstanding about the disease has often led to misdiagnosis, and this lack of medicalknowledge hinders both intervention efforts and clinical trials, andWhereas, the recognition of May 2025 as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy AwarenessMonth will create greater public and health care community awareness of PSP, highlightthe continuing effort to find a cure, and provide comfort to the families whose lives havebeen drastically altered, now therefore be itResolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:That the General Assembly recognizes May 2025 as Progressive Supranuclear PalsyAwareness Month in Vermont, and be it furtherResolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution toCurePSP in New York City and to the Vermont Medical Society.VT LEG #382337 v.1
