Troehler was born in the6 small farming town of Fairbury to parents Grover C. and Aline7 Troehler on March 3, 1916; he married Ruth M. Urban on February8 21, 1941, and they settled in Chicago, where they had three9 sons, Eugene, William, and Robert; and10 WHEREAS, SSG Troehler was inducted into the United States11 Army at Gary, Indiana on March 23, 1943; he received his basic12 training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and advanced13 individual training at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky; upon14 completion of training, he was assigned to the 75th Infantry15 Division and further assigned to Company D, 289th Infantry16 Regiment; the 75th Infantry Division was activated April 15,17 1943 and deployed overseas on November 14, 1944; and18 WHEREAS, SSG Troehler entered combat as a Heavy Weapons19 NCO and Section Leader under the 75th Infantry Division on20 Christmas Day 1944 in the Ardennes Counter Offensive, later21 known as the Battle of the Bulge; andHJ0032 - 2 - LRB104 13421 MST 25775 r1 WHEREAS, SSG Troehler returned to the U.S. in April 19452 after marching through England, France, Belgium, and3 Luxemburg; and4 WHEREAS, SSG Troehler received numerous medals, including5 the Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, the6 European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War7 II Victory Medal, and the Army Occupation Medal; and8 WHEREAS, SSG Troehler received the Combat Infantry Badge,9 the Expert Infantry Badge, and the Expert Marksmanship Badge;10 he was also given the Honorable Service Lapel Button; and11 WHEREAS, SSG Troehler passed away on April 13, 1989 in12 Chicago; therefore, be it13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE14 HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE15 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate U.S. Route 24 as16 it travels through Fairbury as the "SSG Wilbur E. Troehler17 Memorial Highway"; and be it further18 RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation19 is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with20 State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs21 giving notice of the name "SSG Wilbur E. Troehler MemorialHJ0032 - 3 - LRB104 13421 MST 25775 r1 Highway"; and be it further2 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be3 presented to the family of SSG Troehler, the Mayor of4 Fairbury, and the Secretary of Transportation.
