charter school, and state accredited nonpublic elementary school to
include print handwriting, cursive handwriting, and spelling in its
curriculum.

                    SENATE BILL No. 58
    A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
 education.
     Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
1    SECTION 1. IC 20-30-5-7, AS AMENDED BY P.L.214-2025,
2 SECTION 141, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS
3 [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2026]: Sec. 7. (a) Each school corporation shall
4 include in the school corporation's curriculum the following studies:
5      (1) Language arts, including:
6(A) English;
7(B) grammar;
8(C) composition;
9(D) speech; and
10(E) second languages;
11(F) for an elementary school:
12(i) print handwriting; and
13(ii) cursive handwriting; and
14(G) for kindergarten through grade 6, spelling.
15      (2) Mathematics.
16      (3) Social studies and citizenship, including the:
17(A) constitutions;

1(B) governmental systems; and
2(C) histories;
3of Indiana and the United States, including an enhanced study of
4the Holocaust in each high school United States history course.
5As part of the United States government credit awarded for the
6general, Core 40, Core 40 with academic honors, and Core 40
7with technical honors designation, each high school shall
8administer the naturalization examination provided by the United
9States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
10(4) Sciences, including, after June 30, 2021, computer science.
11(5) Fine arts, including music and art.
12(6) Health education, physical fitness, safety, and the effects of
13alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other substances on the human body.
14(7) Additional studies selected by each governing body, subject
15to revision by the state board.
16     (b) Not later than November 1 each year, the department shall report
17 to the general assembly in an electronic format under IC 5-14-6 the
18 following:
19(1) The number of students who took the naturalization
20examination described in subsection (a)(3).
21(2) The number of students who passed the naturalization
22examination described in subsection (a)(3) by a score of not less
23than sixty percent (60%) on their first attempt.
24(3) The pass rate of the naturalization examination regarding the
25students who passed as described in subdivision (2).
26     (c) Not more than thirty (30) days after the department reports to the
27 general assembly the information under subsection (b), the department
28 shall post the pass rate under subsection (b)(3) on the department's
29 website.
30     SECTION 2. IC 20-30-5-7.2 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
31 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
32 1, 2026]: Sec. 7.2. A charter school and a state accredited nonpublic
33 elementary school shall include in the charter school's and state
34 accredited nonpublic elementary school's curriculum the following
35 language arts studies:
36(1) For an elementary school:
37(A) print handwriting; and
38(B) cursive handwriting.
39(2) For kindergarten through grade 6, spelling.
