Resolution (H. 4574) to request the Department of Transportation name the
bridge that crosses the Edisto River on South Carolina Highway 61 at the Dorchester/Colleton
County line the, etc., respectfully

A concurrent RESOLUTION
To request the Department of Transportation
name the bridge that crosses the Edisto River on South Carolina Highway 61 at
the Dorchester/colleton County line the "Ernest Grover Ewers Sr. Memorial
Bridge" and erect appropriate signs or markers at this location containing
these words.
Whereas, born
March 16, 1943, in Summerville, Earnest Grover Ewers Sr. was the son of Amos
and Gladys Ewers. A true Southern gentleman with a
heart as big as the Edisto River he called home, Grover lived a full and
vibrant life surrounded by the people and places he loved most. He proudly
served his country in the United States Navy, earning the rank of E-4 before
returning to civilian life, where he spent many dedicated years working in the
railroad industry; and
Whereas, Grover was a devoted husband, having shared over sixty-four
wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Barbara Ewers. Together,
they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family; a bond that stood as an
example to all who knew them. Their union produced three children, sons Earnest
Grover Ewers Jr., who predeceased him, William "Bill" A. Ewers, and a daughter,
Debra Mackey. The extended family grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren;
and
Whereas, after retiring, Grover put his passion for cooking to good
use by starting a successful catering business that brought joy and full
bellies to countless friends and neighbors. Known for his mouthwatering dishes,
Grover's food, and the stories he told while serving it, made every gathering
feel like a celebration; and
Whereas, a man who
never met a stranger, Grover's easy laugh, kind heart, and unforgettable
presence made him the life of every party. He had more friends than he could
count, and he treasured each one like family. Whether he was fishing, hunting,
or just sitting by the river with his loyal dog, Jinx, Grover lived each day
with gratitude and joy; and
Whereas, deeply
committed to fellowship and service, Grover was a proud Mason, a Shriner, and a
member of the Jesters organization. He also took
great pride in being a part of the Hillbilly Clan 82, where his humor and
warmth made him a cherished brother among brothers; and
Whereas, Grover believed in the power of family, friendship, and
bringing them all together. It wasn't just a part of his life, it was the way
he lived it. He passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, at the venerable age
of 82 leaving behind a legacy of laughter, loyalty, and love, and a community
that is better because he was in it. Grover will be dearly missed but never
forgotten. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by
the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members
of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request the
Department of Transportation name the bridge that crosses the Edisto River on
South Carolina Highway 61 at the Dorchester/Colleton County line the "Ernest Grover
Ewers Sr. Memorial Bridge" and erect appropriate signs or markers at this
location containing these words.
Be it further
resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of
Transportation.
