4 SJR___ RECOGNIZING PINEYWOODS CATTLE AS AN OFFICIAL HERITAGE
5 CATTLE BREED OF THE STATE OF ALABAMA.

7WHEREAS, Pineywoods cattle are among the oldest
8 cattle breeds in North America, originating from Spanish
9 stock introduced to the Gulf Coast region in the early
10 1500s; and
11WHEREAS, these cattle have contributed significantly
12 to Alabama's agricultural development, providing meat, milk,
13 and draft power for early settlers and farmers; and
14WHEREAS, Pineywoods cattle possess unique
15 characteristics such as disease resistance, heat tolerance,
16 and adaptability to native forage, making them ideally
17 suited to Alabama's environment; and
18WHEREAS, the breed is currently listed as threatened
19 by the Livestock Conservancy, with fewer than 1,000 annual
20 registrations nationwide, highlighting the importance of
21 preservation; and
22WHEREAS, Alabama hosts historic Pineywoods strains
23 and dedicated breeders who strive to conserve this vital
24 part of our state's agricultural heritage; now therefore,
25BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
26 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Pineywoods cattle are hereby
27 recognized as an official heritage cattle breed of Alabama.

28BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
29 resolution be transmitted to the Alabama Department of
30 Agriculture and Industries, the Livestock Conservancy, and
31 Pineywoods breeders throughout the state to promote
32 awareness and conservation efforts.
