5 ADVANCEMENT ACT AND FREEDOM TO VOTE ACT.

7WHEREAS, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement
8 Act, designated as House Resolution Fourteen, was
9 reintroduced in the 119th United States Congress by U.S.
10 Representative Terri Sewell on March 5, 2025, on the 60th
11 Anniversary of Bloody Sunday; and
12WHEREAS, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement
13 Act was reintroduced in the 119th United States Congress as
14 Senate Bill Four by U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Raphael
15 Warnock on July 29, 2025; and
16WHEREAS, the Freedom to Vote Act, designated as House
17 Resolution Eleven, of which former Congressman John R. Lewis
18 authored the first 300 pages, was previously introduced in
19 the 117th United States Congress by U.S. Representative John
20 P. Sarbanes on July 18, 2023, and was also introduced as
21 Senate Bill One by U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar on July 25,
22 2023; now therefore,
23BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
24 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we, the members of the
25 Alabama Legislature,
26(1) Support the enactment and execution of the
27 congressional legislation, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights
28 Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act; as well as

29(2) Recognize the work and lifelong legacy of former
30 Congressman John R. Lewis, and, with the support of this
31 Legislation, the State of Alabama and nation will "Get in
32 good trouble, necessary trouble" in acknowledgment and
33 celebration of his extraordinary dedication to the cause of
34 civil and human rights.
