A concurrent RESOLUTION
To request the Department of Transportation erect
appropriate markers or signs at the traffic circle located at the intersection
of Camp Road and Fort Johnson Road on James Island in Charleston County that
contain the words "In Memory of Sgt. First Class Isaac Gethers Jr."
Whereas, born October
8, 1938, and raised in Charleston County on James Island, Sergeant First Class
(SFC) Isaac Gethers Jr. devoted more than fifty years of service to the Honey
Hill Neighborhood Association where his leadership, compassion, and unwavering
commitment to others profoundly shaped the community; and
Whereas, a lifelong
caregiver, Gethers embodied generosity in action - supporting neighbors in
need, offering words of encouragement, and providing emotional and spiritual
guidance. His work with homeless veterans was especially impactful as he helped
countless veterans access resources, benefits, and pathways back into society.
He drew on his own deep understanding of the moral and spiritual
responsibilities of the military in aiding these veterans; and
Whereas, a 1956
graduate of W.G. Meggett High School, Gethers excelled in football and
basketball. He was inducted into the 2025 Hall of Fame and was one of only six
surviving players to receive a championship ring during halftime at the October
3, 2025, game, nearly seventy years after winning the state championship. A
lack of funding prevented the players from receiving their rings in 1956; and
Whereas, his
distinguished military career as a sergeant first class carried him across
multiple countries and earned him numerous commendations. Throughout his
service and travels, he remained a mentor, friend, and exemplary representative
of the James Island community; and
Whereas, Gether's
character, defined by integrity, kindness, and a profound commitment to
uplifting others, left an enduring mark on everyone who knew him. SFC Isaac
Gethers Jr. passed away on October 16, 2025, at the venerable age of
eighty-seven. His ability to inspire, guide, and transform lives makes it only
fitting and proper that this native son of the Palmetto State is memorialized along
a segment of highway on James Island. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House
of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the
South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request the Department of
Transportation erect appropriate markers or signs at the traffic circle located
at the intersection of Camp Road and Fort Johnson Road on James Island in Charleston
County that contain the words "In Memory of Sgt. First Class Isaac Gethers Jr."
Be it further resolved that
a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
