5086) to request the Department of Transportation name the intersection of United
States Highway 78 and Mallard Road in the Town of Jedburg in Dorchester County

A concurrent RESOLUTION
To request the Department of Transportation name the
intersection of United States Highway 78 and Mallard Road in the Town of
Jedburg in Dorchester County "Herman Elroy Muckenfuss Memorial Intersection"
and erect appropriate signs or markers at this location containing these words.
Whereas, devoted
husband and father, successful businessman, workaholic, storyteller, Southern
gentleman- all are terms used to describe Herman Elroy Muckenfuss of Jedburg.
Life wasn't always easy for this humble servant. Born in Charleston on November
6, 1942, to Adam David and Estelle Stack Muckenfuss, his widowed mother moved
Herman and his seven siblings to Jedburg to be surrounded by her family; and
Whereas, he graduated
from Summerville High School in 1961 and entered the military, serving two
years in the United States Army. Returning home, he began working for Seaboard
Railroad. His habit of working a dawn-to-dusk schedule started young in life
and continued until his health declined. An astute businessman, he owned and
operated a number of establishments, and went on to become a pillar of the
Jedburg and Summerville communities which he supported throughout his life; and
Whereas, an avid
storyteller, he could hold an audience captive for hours telling stories most
had heard before, but with new life and adventure as he retold them with his
remarkable sense of humor and wit. He also had a passion for old cars or
"street rods." He owned several over the years and took great pride in each one
of them; and
Whereas, a true
Southern gentleman, Muckenfuss met everyone with a smile and a firm handshake,
and he always said, "yes ma'am and yes sir." He was generous, considerate, and
concerned about the wellbeing of those around him. He truly set a wonderful
example for his family on how to live one's life and how others should be
treated. His background was humble, yet he never dwelled on his success. This
was his upbringing; and
Whereas, Muckenfuss
loved life, and he especially loved his family and friends. The expression,
"behind every successful man, there is a woman" certainly was true of Nell D.
Muckenfuss, his wife of forty-seven years. Nell was "that" woman and he loved
and appreciated her dearly. His love for his children and grandchildren was
surpassed only by his love for Nell. Together they raised a son, Todd, and a
daughter, Nicole, who blessed them with four grandchildren; and
Whereas, an obedient
servant to God, Muckenfuss was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of
Jedburg, the Adult Co-ed III Sunday school class, and the adult choir; and
Whereas, Herman Elroy
Muckenfuss left his earthly home to be with his Savior on Saturday, January 31,
2015, following a long battle with Alzheimer's. Loved by all who knew him, it
is only fitting and proper that this Southern gentleman, who led a life of
honesty, kindness, and loyalty, be honored with an intersection in his beloved
Town of Jedburg named in his memory. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House
of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the
South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request the Department of
Transportation name the intersection of United States Highway 78 and Mallard
Road in the Town of Jedburg in Dorchester County "Herman Elroy Muckenfuss
Memorial Intersection" and erect appropriate signs or markers at this location
containing these words.
Be it further resolved that
a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
