4 SJR___ COMMENDING TOMMY JACQUES FOR EMERGENCY ACTIONS TO
5 HELP A SICK CHILD.

7WHEREAS, with utmost gratitude and deepest respect,
8 we commend Madison City Schools (MCS) bus driver Tommy
9 Jacques for demonstrating heroic actions during his bus
10 route for Midtown Elementary School on November 18, 2025;
11 and
12WHEREAS, Tommy Jacques cared for an unresponsive
13 child until first responders could arrive; the child has
14 completely recovered and returned to school; and
15WHEREAS, on the morning of November 18, 2025, a young
16 boy was sitting behind Tommy, but, with the tall seats, he
17 could not see him directly; as the route progressed, another
18 student told him the boy was not waking up; and
19WHEREAS, Tommy gave the Lord credit for his actions
20 in this harrowing event; immediately, he pulled the bus
21 over, called the MCS bus garage to report his location and
22 current scenario, and explained that he needed an ambulance;
23 and
24WHEREAS, Tommy then had the other students move to
25 the back, felt the boy's pulse, and put him on his side; by
26 that time, a policeman had reached the bus, and a few short
27 minutes later, paramedics arrived on the scene; and
28WHEREAS, the boy was eventually taken to the

29 hospital, where he revived and completely recovered; upon
30 his return to school, his friends on the bus greeted him
31 with applause; and
32WHEREAS, Tommy was recently honored at a Madison
33 Board of Education meeting for his quick action, calm
34 demeanor, and lifesaving skills by MCS Superintendent Dr. Ed
35 Nichols and Transportation Administrator Dr. Travis
36 Schrimsher; his certificate of recognition commends him for
37 his "exceptional high standard of empathy, patience, care,
38 and professionalism shown for the safety and well-being of
39 students"; and
40WHEREAS, prior to moving to Alabama, Tommy
41 accumulated eight years of experience in bus driving while
42 living in the small town of Franklin Furnace, Ohio; the
43 school system was so small that it required only seven
44 buses, contrasting with Madison's 107; fortunately, however,
45 the school system provided annual training and CPR classes
46 that helped Tommy respond to an emergency; he and another
47 driver in Ohio also taught a safety class that guided
48 students about safely exiting a bus and gathering as a
49 group; and
50WHEREAS, currently, Tommy talks to his bus riders
51 every day about safety; he has even explained to one student
52 how to use the bus radio to call the transportation office
53 if he has a medical emergency; to reinforce safety measures,
54 Tommy encourages parents to talk to their children about
55 sitting in their seats properly, as well as not eating on
56 the bus due to the risk of choking; now therefore,

57BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
58 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we proudly commend Tommy
59 Jacques for his quick and appropriate response to the safety
60 and well-being of his bus riders, and this resolution is
61 offered to him in sincere appreciation for his hard work and
62 the impeccable example that he has set for the students and
63 employees of Madison City Schools.
