House concurrent resolution recognizing March 2026 as Social WorkMonth in Vermont.(H.C.R.213)Offered by Representatives Rachelson of Burlington and Cina of BurlingtonOffered by Senator VyhovskyWhereas, for more than a century, social workers in Vermont have worked to improvehuman well-being, advocate for justice, and support everyone’s basic needs, andWhereas, the positive impact of social workers on the lives of millions of Americans isexperienced at hospitals, schools, child welfare agencies, community centers, and withinthe federal, state, and local governments, andWhereas, social workers follow a code of ethics that requires them to stand for equityin every community, uphold human dignity, and fight injustice, andWhereas, these stellar professionals are on the frontlines defending vulnerablepopulations, including immigrants, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, and those facingdiscrimination or poverty, while uplifting vital social safety net programs and ensuringthe rights of everyone, andWhereas, social workers assist those navigating trauma, grief, and systemic biases andhelp individuals recover from natural disasters and public health crises, transforminglives in encouraging ways, andWhereas, vital roles for social workers are confronting oppression and racism,advocating for human rights, and advancing fair policies for all, andWhereas, social workers care for those who have mental health issues and who arerecovering from substance use disorders, and they support the well-being of children, andWhereas, according to the National Association of Social Workers, the number ofsocial workers in the United States has risen from 715,000 in 2020 to 810,000 in 2026,and, since 1963, March has been observed in the United States as Social WorkMonth, andWhereas, the 2026 theme for Social Work Month is “Social Workers: Uplift. Defend.Transform.” encompassing “the prime mission of the social work profession – to enhancehuman well-being, meet the basic human needs of all people, and put special attention onthe needs and empowerment of people [who] are vulnerable, oppressed and living inpoverty,” now therefore be itResolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:That the General Assembly recognizes March 2026 as Social Work Month inVermont, and be it furtherResolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution tothe Vermont chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.VT LEG #388023 v.1
