EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THE HONORABLE CARLO
SPIRITO, JR.

WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Carlo
Spirito, Jr., of Cranston and Pompano Beach, Florida. Mr. Spirito was the beloved husband of
Florence Spirito; and
WHEREAS, Carlo Spirito, Jr., was the third of six children born to the late Carlo and
Antonetta Spirito. Carlo was a truly talented Renaissance man who was a skilled musician as a
drummer, built and remodeled homes, installed swimming pools, and worked as a neighborhood
barber. All of this skillful work was accomplished in addition to his full-time profession as a math
teacher and Department Chair at Western Hills Junior High School, instilling not only knowledge
but also values of diligence and integrity; and
WHEREAS, Carlo was also a distinguished public servant who served with passion and
abiding integrity as a member of the Cranston City Council for five non-consecutive terms from
1968 to 1983, rising to serve as Council President from 1979 to 1981. Carlo always advocated for
the best interests of the citizens of Cranston; and
WHEREAS, Carlo was a man of deep religious faith. He was a charter member of the
Saint Mary Feast Society, and proudly carried the Saint in the annual Madonna Della Civita
procession until the age of 86. In his free time, Carlo enjoyed playing cards, and golfing at the
Alpine Country Club, Pompano Municipal Golf Course, and Cranston Country Club; and
WHEREAS, Carlo Spirito, Jr., is survived by his beloved wife, Florence, his sons Steven
Spirito and his wife, Nancy, and Michael Spirito, his granddaughter, Anya Spirito, and his many
nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends. Mr. Spirito was predeceased by his siblings Walter,
Edwin, Florence and her husband, Marshall, Arlene and her husband, Stiles, and Josephine and
her husband, McLendon; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby
expresses its deepest condolences to the Spirito Family on the passing of the Honorable Carlo
Spirito, Jr.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Florence Spirito and Family.
