A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To support the creation of a U.S. Great Lakes Waterfront 1
Trail. 2
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, The Great Lakes are the largest system of 3
freshwater lakes in the world; and 4
WHEREAS, Canada's Great Lakes Waterfront Trail stretches 5
more than 2,250 miles from Lake Superior to the St. Lawrence 6
River at the Ontario-Quebec border. The trail is a greenway 7
route of interconnecting roads and off-road trails joining more 8
than 150 communities, including Indigenous nations; and 9
WHEREAS, There are currently three established or emerging 10
pedestrian and bicycle international crossings between the 11
United States and Canada; and 12
WHEREAS, The National Park Service's Rivers, Trails, and 13
Conservation Assistance Program is currently mapping a potential 14
route for a recreational trail along all eight Great Lakes 15
states; and 16
WHEREAS, Recreational trails connect people with nature, 17
improve public health, and foster economic activity; and 18

WHEREAS, The State of Ohio and its communities have worked 19
to establish a scenic byway, local trails, and bike routes 20
across its 312 miles of Lake Erie shoreline; and 21
WHEREAS, Extensive planning has been done to envision 22
shoreline experiences, especially in the greater Cleveland area 23
and Sandusky; now therefore be it 24
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 136th General 25
Assembly of the State of Ohio, support the work being done 26
towards the creation of the U.S. Great Lakes Waterfront Trail; 27
and be it further 28
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 136th General 29
Assembly of the State of Ohio, urge Ohio agencies, regional 30
planning organizations, metropolitan planning organizations, and 31
other interested entities to continue to coordinate with other 32
states on a shared identity for this regional trail; and be it 33
further 34
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly 35
authenticated copies of this resolution to the news media of 36
Ohio. 37
