4 SJR___ COMMENDING MRS. KELLI FISCHER ON BEING NAMED THE
5 2025-2026 ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR.

7WHEREAS, the Alabama Legislature is pleased to
8 recognize and commend Mrs. Katherine "Kelli" Fischer,
9 principal of Opelika High School in the Opelika City School
10 System, upon her selection as the 2025–2026 Alabama High
11 School Principal of the Year by the Alabama Association of
12 Secondary School Principals (AASSP); and
13WHEREAS, this prestigious honor recognizes
14 exceptional leadership in instructional excellence, school
15 culture, innovation, and student success, and Mrs. Fischer
16 has distinguished herself in each of these areas through her
17 dedicated service to the students and families of Opelika;
18 and
19WHEREAS, with 15 years in education and 10 years in
20 administrative leadership, Mrs. Fischer has demonstrated
21 transformative leadership at Opelika High School, marked by
22 deep relational investment, thoughtful systems-level change,
23 and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every student
24 feels seen, supported, and positioned for success; and
25WHEREAS, following the tragic events of 2023, when
26 several Opelika High School students were impacted by the
27 Dadeville mass shooting, Mrs. Fischer rose to meet the
28 moment with courage, compassion, and resolve, redefining her

29 leadership to prioritize healing, belonging, purpose, and
30 resilience within the school community; and
31WHEREAS, under her leadership, Opelika High School
32 fostered a culture where care and high expectations coexist,
33 and two students injured in the tragedy returned to walk
34 across the graduation stage in 2024, an achievement Mrs.
35 Fischer has identified as one of the proudest moments of her
36 professional career; and
37WHEREAS, to translate vision into action, Mrs.
38 Fischer launched impactful school-wide initiatives,
39 including Dawg Impact Groups (DIG), a daily advisory
40 structure that pairs each student with a consistent adult
41 mentor and peer group to promote connection, accountability,
42 and timely academic and social-emotional support; and
43WHEREAS, she also established Dedicated Dawgs, a
44 student incentive program aligned with expectations for
45 attendance, achievement, and behavior, providing frequent
46 and meaningful recognition that reinforces positive habits
47 and school pride; and
48WHEREAS, these initiatives have produced measurable
49 and meaningful outcomes, including reductions in chronic
50 absenteeism and behavior referrals, increased student
51 engagement, and stronger student-reported connections to
52 school and purpose in learning; now therefore,
53BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
54 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we do hereby commend Mrs.
55 Katherine "Kelli" Fischer for her outstanding leadership and
56 service, congratulate her on being named the 2025-2026

58 the sincere appreciation and best wishes of the Legislature
59 for continued success in all her future endeavors.
