SJR___ COMMENDING MRS. KELLI FISCHER ON BEING NAMED THE
2025-2026 ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR.
WHEREAS, the Alabama Legislature is pleased to
recognize and commend Mrs. Katherine "Kelli" Fischer,
principal of Opelika High School in the Opelika City School
System, upon her selection as the 2025–2026 Alabama High
School Principal of the Year by the Alabama Association of
Secondary School Principals (AASSP); and
WHEREAS, this prestigious honor recognizes
exceptional leadership in instructional excellence, school
culture, innovation, and student success, and Mrs. Fischer
has distinguished herself in each of these areas through her
dedicated service to the students and families of Opelika;
and
WHEREAS, with 15 years in education and 10 years in
administrative leadership, Mrs. Fischer has demonstrated
transformative leadership at Opelika High School, marked by
deep relational investment, thoughtful systems-level change,
and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every student
feels seen, supported, and positioned for success; and
WHEREAS, following the tragic events of 2023, when
several Opelika High School students were impacted by the
Dadeville mass shooting, Mrs. Fischer rose to meet the
moment with courage, compassion, and resolve, redefining her

leadership to prioritize healing, belonging, purpose, and
resilience within the school community; and
WHEREAS, under her leadership, Opelika High School
fostered a culture where care and high expectations coexist,
and two students injured in the tragedy returned to walk
across the graduation stage in 2024, an achievement Mrs.
Fischer has identified as one of the proudest moments of her
professional career; and
WHEREAS, to translate vision into action, Mrs.
Fischer launched impactful school-wide initiatives,
including Dawg Impact Groups (DIG), a daily advisory
structure that pairs each student with a consistent adult
mentor and peer group to promote connection, accountability,
and timely academic and social-emotional support; and
WHEREAS, she also established Dedicated Dawgs, a
student incentive program aligned with expectations for
attendance, achievement, and behavior, providing frequent
and meaningful recognition that reinforces positive habits
and school pride; and
WHEREAS, these initiatives have produced measurable
and meaningful outcomes, including reductions in chronic
absenteeism and behavior referrals, increased student
engagement, and stronger student-reported connections to
school and purpose in learning; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we do hereby commend Mrs.
Katherine "Kelli" Fischer for her outstanding leadership and
service, congratulate her on being named the 2025-2026

the sincere appreciation and best wishes of the Legislature
for continued success in all her future endeavors.
