No. R-277. Senate concurrent resolution designating October 5, 2026, as Italian
American Day in Vermont.

  Offered by Senators Heffernan, Baruth, Beck, Benson, Bongartz, Brennan, Brock,
Chittenden, Collamore, Cummings, Harrison, Hashim, Ingalls, Lyons, Major, Mattos,
Morley, Norris, Perchlik, Weeks, Westman and Williams,
    Whereas, the proud history of the Italian American community in Vermont started in
the 1880s, when economic conditions in Italy persuaded many Italians to emigrate from
Italy to the United States in hopes of a more prosperous future for their families, and
   Whereas, Italian immigrants who were highly skilled in stone crafts settled in the
Rutland-Proctor area and found employment, especially at the Vermont Marble Company,
a large business that owned multiple quarries and became the source for the marble
contained in prominent public buildings across the country, and
    Whereas, from 1890 to 1910, a significant population of new Italian immigrants, as well
as those who had originally settled in and around Rutland, came to Barre, to apply their
artisan and stone-cutting skills in the granite industry; they contributed significantly to the
development of Barre as the granite capital of the world, and their magnificent
craftsmanship is on display in Vermont and elsewhere, and
    Whereas, Italian Americans were critical to the emergence of labor unions in Vermont,
as they endeavored to develop fair wages, benefits, and tolerable working conditions in the
marble and granite industries, and
   Whereas, the contributions of Italian Americans are notable in many aspects of Vermont
society, including agriculture, the arts, civic participation, construction, economic
development, food production, manufacturing, and State and local government, and
   Whereas, it is fitting to honor Italian Americans in recognition of their outstanding
contributions to the cultural and economic engine that is Vermont, now therefore be it
   Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
  That the General Assembly designates October 5, 2026, as Italian American Day in
Vermont, and be it further
  Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
Christine Stone.
