Document has been reformatted to meet World Wide Web specifications.)A senate RESOLUTIONTO HONOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES LIVING WITHAMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (ALS), TO RECOGNIZE CAREGIVERS AND HEALTHCAREPROVIDERS, TO INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT THE REALITIES OF THIS DEVASTATINGDISEASE, TO DEMONSTRATE THE STATE'S COMMITMENT TO SUPPORTING THOSE IMPACTED BYTHE DISEASE, AND TO DECLARE MAY 2026 AS "AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSISAWARENESS MONTH" IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.Whereas, amyotrophiclateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is aprogressive, fatal, neurodegenerative disease in which the brain losesconnection with the muscles, slowly reducing a person's ability to walk, talk,eat, and eventually breathe; andWhereas, the ALSAssociation works in communities across the Palmetto State to provide careservices, equipment, advocacy, and research support; andWhereas, thousands ofnew ALS cases are reported every year, and estimates show that someone isdiagnosed with ALS and that someone passes away from ALS every ninety minutes;andWhereas, on average,patients diagnosed with ALS survive only two to five years from the time ofdiagnosis; andWhereas, the exactcauses of ALS are unknown and there is no known cure for ALS; andWhereas, people whohave served in the military are more likely to develop ALS and die from thedisease than those with no history of military service; andWhereas, securingaccess to new therapies, to durable medical equipment, and to communicationtechnologies is of vital importance to people living with ALS; andWhereas, clinicaltrials play a pivotal role in evaluating new treatments, enhancing quality oflife, and fostering assistive technologies for those living with ALS; andWhereas, the ALSAssociation is the largest philanthropic funder of ALS research globally andhas committed more than $154 million dollars to support more than five hundredfifty projects across the United States and in eighteen other countries; andWhereas, the ALSAssociation is committed to making ALS livable and to curing it for everyoneeverywhere; andWhereas, AmyotrophicLateral Sclerosis Awareness Month provides an opportunity to increase publicawareness of the dire circumstances of people living with ALS, to acknowledgethe terrible impact this disease has on those individuals and their families, andto support research to eradicate this disease.
