4 SR____ DESIGNATING ALABAMA AS "THE RIVER STATE."

6WHEREAS, the first Seal of Alabama (1817–1868)
7 depicted a map of the state highlighting its rivers,
8 emphasizing these waterways as among Alabama's most valuable
9 natural resources for navigation, agriculture, and
10 transportation; it presented the state as a land of
11 opportunity sustained by abundant water resources; and
12WHEREAS, more than two centuries later, the enduring
13 importance of these waterways remains reflected in the
14 official Great Seal of Alabama, which was readopted in 1939
15 to underscore that our rivers were, and remain, vital assets
16 to the state; and
17WHEREAS, Alabama's waterways played a vital role in
18 early settlement and in the state's transportation,
19 agricultural, industrial, and cultural development; and
20WHEREAS, the more than 132,000 miles of rivers and
21 stream channels that traverse Alabama are not only
22 foundational to our history but essential to our continued
23 economic growth, environmental health, and quality of life;
24 and
25WHEREAS, designating Alabama as "The River State"
26 honors our heritage, celebrates our natural environment, and
27 affirms our commitment to stewarding these unique and
28 globally significant resources for future generations; now

29 therefore,
30BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE LEGISLATURE OF
31 ALABAMA, That in recognition of the importance of protecting
32 and preserving our most abundant natural resource, we hereby
33 designate Alabama to be "The River State."
