SR____ DESIGNATING ALABAMA AS "THE RIVER STATE."
WHEREAS, the first Seal of Alabama (1817–1868)
depicted a map of the state highlighting its rivers,
emphasizing these waterways as among Alabama's most valuable
natural resources for navigation, agriculture, and
transportation; it presented the state as a land of
opportunity sustained by abundant water resources; and
WHEREAS, more than two centuries later, the enduring
importance of these waterways remains reflected in the
official Great Seal of Alabama, which was readopted in 1939
to underscore that our rivers were, and remain, vital assets
to the state; and
WHEREAS, Alabama's waterways played a vital role in
early settlement and in the state's transportation,
agricultural, industrial, and cultural development; and
WHEREAS, the more than 132,000 miles of rivers and
stream channels that traverse Alabama are not only
foundational to our history but essential to our continued
economic growth, environmental health, and quality of life;
and
WHEREAS, designating Alabama as "The River State"
honors our heritage, celebrates our natural environment, and
affirms our commitment to stewarding these unique and
globally significant resources for future generations; now

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE LEGISLATURE OF
ALABAMA, That in recognition of the importance of protecting
and preserving our most abundant natural resource, we hereby
designate Alabama to be "The River State."
