Whereas, a lifelong Hyde Park resident, Ken Harvey graduated from Lamoille Union
High School and Champlain College, and
Whereas, his successful business career commenced at 20 years of age when he
established Ken’s Mobil in Morrisville, and he subsequently opened additional gas
stations in Johnson and Montpelier, and his ventures expanded to include mobile home
parks, an oil company, a plumbing and heating establishment, a campground, a gravel pit,
and a storage unit facility, and
Whereas, in 1981, Ken Harvey turned his attention to serving the citizens of Hyde
Park, winning a seat on the Hyde Park selectboard, diligently working for many years on
this panel’s oversight of municipal government, and his insightful leadership would result
in election as the selectboard chair, and
Whereas, in 1985, Ken Harvey was appointed as Hyde Park road commissioner, a
responsibility he exercised attentively and effectively, and
Whereas, the community appreciated the excellence of his local government
involvement, and, in 1983, his neighbors elected Ken Harvey to represent them in the
House of Representatives, in which he served for five consecutive terms; notwithstanding
the House’s partisan alignment, the admiration of his colleagues combined with a first-
hand knowledge of local road management led to his appointment as chair of the House
Committee on Transportation; and his fellow legislators selected him to serve on the
board of the Vermont State Colleges, and
Whereas, as a founding member of the Hyde Park Recreation Committee, Ken Harvey
played a key role in the development of the town’s new athletic facility; he served on the
Lamoille County Sheriff’s Advisory Board; and was a member of local fraternal
organizations, and
Whereas, on February 26, 2026, Ken Harvey died at 74 years of age, leaving the love
of his life, Debbie Slayton; an extended family; and many friends with fond memories,
now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly expresses its sincere condolences to the family of former
Representative and Hyde Park Selectboard Chair Kenneth A. Harvey, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
Debbie Slayton and the Hyde Park Town Clerk.
