Printed 4/28/26--S.Read the first time April 21, 2026________A concurrent RESOLUTIONTo request the Department of Transportationname the portion of Highway Church Road between Stephen Campbell Road and LarryJeffers Road in the Town of Elgin in Kershaw County "Jeannie Rose Potter Road"and erect appropriate signs or markers at this location containing these words.Whereas, afaithful government servant, Jeannie Rose Potter dedicated thirty-five years ofher working career to the State of South Carolina demonstrating compassion indiligent service to so many elected officials, organizations, and communities;andWhereas, Mrs.Potter served fourteen years in the Kershaw County Sheriff's Department assecretary to then Sheriff Hector DeBruhl; andWhereas, shebegan her thirty-five year career with the State as executive secretary in theSouth Carolina House Ways and Means Committee, serving under three successivecommittee chairmen - William Boan, Henry Brown, and Robert Harrell Jr.; andWhereas, in2005, she became the executive assistant to Speaker of the House ofRepresentatives Robert Harrell Jr. and served continuously in that position forHouse Speakers Jay Lucas and G. Murrell Smith, until she retired in 2024; andWhereas, mostimportantly, she was the loving and devoted wife to Kershaw County DeputySheriff Ernest Christian Potter III, who was tragically killed in the line ofduty in 1974. High school sweethearts, the couple was married in July 1972.Their only child, Ernest Christian "Little Chris" Potter IV was born six monthsafter his father was killed. Jeannie raised "Little Chris" as a single mother,receiving support from family, friends, and the law enforcement community whilemaintaining a life of service; andWhereas, hercommunity involvement knew no boundaries. Mrs. Potter served twenty years as avolunteer girls basketball coach for the Kershaw County Recreation Department.She also was a faithful volunteer for the Elgin Catfish Stomp parade for manyyears led by then Elgin Mayor Don Watson Jr.; andWhereas, gratefulfor her accomplishments and many years of service to the State of SouthCarolina, it is only fitting and proper that Jeannie Rose Potter is rememberedwith a portion of road in her beloved Town of Elgin named in her honor. Now, therefore,Be it resolved bythe House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:That the membersof the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request theDepartment of Transportation name the portion of Highway Church Road betweenStephen Campbell Road and Larry Jeffers Road in the Town of Elgin in KershawCounty "Jeannie Rose Potter Road" and erect appropriate signs or markers atthis location containing these words.Be it furtherresolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department ofTransportation.----XX---This web page was last updated on April 28, 2026 at 05:41 PM
