Document has been reformatted to meet World Wide Web specifications.)A senate RESOLUTIONTO CONGRATULATE Jack Merritt Edwards ON THE OCCASIONOF HIS one hundredth BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HIM A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION ANDMUCH HAPPINESS IN THE DAYS AHEAD.Whereas, the members ofthe South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that Jack Merritt Edwards celebratedthis important milestone on April 11, 2026; andWhereas, a native of Sumter,Mr. Edwards was born on April 11, 1926, to parents James Merritt and GeorgiaAnna Edwards. He is a 1944 graduate of Kingstree High School and an alumnus of TheCitadel; andWhereas, a veteran ofthe United States Navy, Mr. Edwards began his service as a Radioman First Classin the Pacific Theater in 1944 and served for one year in Kobe, Japan after theJapanese surrender in 1945; andWhereas, after hismilitary service and graduation from the Citadel, Mr. Edwards began his careerin real estate. He owned Edwards Insurance and Real Estate, retiring at the ageof eighty-one; andWhereas, a civicleader, Mr. Edwards has served with many community organizations, including theKingstree Town Council, the Williamsburg County School Board, Kingstree Kiwanisand Rotary Clubs as past president, Rotary International as a Paul HarrisFellow, and the South Carolina Independent Insurance Agents Association as pastpresident. Additionally, he served on the Board of Visitors of Francis MarionUniversity, The Exchange Bank of South Carolina Board, and First Citizens Bankof South Carolina Board; andWhereas, a devoutChristian, he is a lifelong member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, wherehe served as an elder, choir member, and Sunday school teacher; andWhereas, Mr. Edwards wasmarried to the late Julia Puckett Edwards, and together, they had two children;andWhereas, the SouthCarolina Senate takes great pleasure in honoring this son of South Carolina atthe celebration of his one hundredth birthday and is pleased to join with hisfamily and friends in congratulating him.
