Document has been reformatted to meet World Wide Web specifications.)A senate RESOLUTIONto recognize and honor Mayor Viola Alexander Lyles forher dedication to public service and efforts to promote equity, opportunity,and progress within the community.Whereas, ViolaAlexander Lyles, born on September 28, 1952, in Columbia, has dedicated herlife to public service, leadership, and community development; andWhereas, Mayor Lylesearned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Queens University ofCharlotte and a Master of Public Administration from University of NorthCarolina at Chapel Hill; andWhereas, Mayor Lylesserved the City of Charlotte in multiple administrative capacities includingbudget analyst, budget director, and assistant city manager demonstratingexceptional commitment to effective municipal governance; andWhereas, she waselected to Charlotte City Council in 2013 and later served as Mayor Pro Temfrom 2015 to 2017; andWhereas, in 2017, MayorLyles made history by becoming the 59th Mayor of Charlotte and thefirst African American woman to serve in that position; andWhereas, throughout hertenure as mayor, she has championed initiatives focused on economic growth,affordable housing, public safety, transportation expansion, racial equity, andcommunity engagement; andWhereas, under herleadership, Charlotte experienced significant economic development, includingthe creation of thousands of jobs expanded opportunities through partnershipswith major corporations and local businesses; andWhereas, Mayor Lyleshas worked to strengthen public transportation infrastructure, expand housingopportunities for low-income residents, and implement programs aimed atreducing violence and increasing racial equity throughout the community; andWhereas, her leadershipand dedication to public service have earned her recognition and support fromnumerous civic, community, and advocacy organizations; andWhereas, she continuesto serve the residents of Charlotte with integrity, vision, and a steadfastcommitment to improving the quality of life for all citizens; andWhereas, Mayor Lyleshas provided outstanding leadership, historic achievements, and enduringcontributions to the City of Charlotte and its residents.
