Commending the University of Virginia women's swimming and diving team.
Agreed to by the Senate, June 22, 2026
WHEREAS, with a victory in the 2026 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of Virginia women's swimming and diving team made history as the first women's swimming and diving team to win six consecutive national championship titles; and
WHEREAS, the University of Virginia (UVA) Cavaliers finished the 2026 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with a team score of 589 points, eclipsing the runners-up from Stanford University by an incredible 208.5 points to record both the largest point total and largest margin of victory in program history; and
WHEREAS, at the national championship meet, the UVA Cavaliers won all five relay events, including the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 800-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard medley relay, and the 400-yard medley relay, and finished first in three individual events, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke, and the 200-yard backstroke; and
WHEREAS, 16 of 18 swimmers scored points over the course of the championship meet, with Aimee Canny, Sara Curtis, Claire Curzan, Bryn Greenwaldt, Bailey Hartman, Madi Mintenko, Anna Moesch, and Emma Weber taking home gold medals; the team also finished with 36 first-team all-American selections and 18 second-team all-American selections; and
WHEREAS, head coach Todd DeSorbo, who now holds the record for the longest title streak in NCAA women's swimming and diving history and is tied for the longest winning streak in NCAA women's swimming and diving overall, was selected by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America as the Women's Division I Swim Coach of the Year; and
WHEREAS, over the past six seasons, the UVA women's swimming and diving team has cemented itself as one of the top-tier athletics programs at the institution and across the nation, earning the third-most NCAA titles among all UVA teams and the fourth-most titles in NCAA women's swimming and diving history; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the University of Virginia women's swimming and diving team hereby be commended on the occasion of its sixth consecutive national championship victory; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Todd DeSorbo, head coach of the University of Virginia women's swimming and diving team, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the team's historic achievements.
