Commends Grambling State University upon the celebration of theone hundred twenty-fifth anniversary of its founding and recognizes its enduringcontributions to higher education, leadership, and public service in the state of Louisiana andbeyond.1A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION2 To commend Grambling State University upon the celebration of the one hundred twenty-3fifth anniversary of its founding and to recognize its enduring contributions to higher4education, leadership, and public service in the state of Louisiana and beyond.5WHEREAS, Grambling State University opened on November 1, 1901, as the6 Colored Industrial and Agricultural School; and7WHEREAS, the institution was founded through the efforts of the North Louisiana8 Colored Agriculture Relief Association, organized in 1896 by African American farmers9 seeking to establish educational opportunities for African Americans in their region of10 Louisiana; and11WHEREAS, in response to the association's request for assistance, Booker T.12 Washington sent Charles P. Adams to help organize the school, and Adams became its13 founding president; and14WHEREAS, in 1905, the institution moved to its present location in Grambling,15 Louisiana, where it has continued for generations to educate students and serve communities16 throughout the state of Louisiana, the nation, and the world; and17WHEREAS, over the course of its distinguished history, the institution evolved in18 name and mission and was designated Grambling State University in 1974, while remainingPage 1 of 2SLS 26RS-4074 ORIGINALSCR NO. 821 steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, opportunity, and service; and2WHEREAS, Grambling State University has stood as a proud and enduring symbol3 of access, achievement, and perseverance and has made an immeasurable impact through the4 education of generations of students and the preparation of leaders, in countless professions5 and fields of service, for one hundred twenty-five years; and6WHEREAS, the university continues to be guided by its well-known motto, "Where7 Everybody is Somebody," a guiding principle that reflects its longstanding commitment to8 human dignity, educational opportunity, and the development of every student; and9WHEREAS, the celebration of the Grambling State University's one hundred twenty-10 fifth anniversary is a fitting occasion on which to recognize its historic legacy and its11 continuing importance to the people of Louisiana.12THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby13 commend Grambling State University upon the celebration of the one hundred twenty-fifth14 anniversary of its founding and does hereby recognize the university for its extraordinary15 and lasting contributions to higher education, leadership, and public service.16BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend17 its sincere best wishes to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, administration, and supporters18 of Grambling State University upon the commemoration of this historic milestone and the19 institution's proud and enduring legacy of excellence.20BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to21 Grambling State University.The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no partof the legislative instrument, were prepared by Senate Legislative Services.The keyword, summary, and digest do not constitute part of the law or proofor indicia of legislative intent.
