Document has been reformatted to meet World Wide Web specifications.)A house RESOLUTIONto recognize and honor the Reverend Remus Harper Jr.upon the occassion of his retirement after forty years of exemplary ministry,and to wish him continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors.Whereas, the SouthCarolina House of Representatives is pleased to honor Reverend Remus Harper Jr.on his upcoming retirement from the ministry in September 2026; andWhereas, Reverend RemusHarper Jr. a native of North Charleston, is the son of the late Remus HarperSr. and Annabelle Stewart Harper. He has distinguished himself as a trailblazerin education, athletics, business, ministry, and community service; andWhereas, he graduatedas valedictorian and basketball team captain from Bonds Wilson High School in1968 and, in 1972, became the first African American to earn a Bachelor ofScience degree in Business Administration from the College of Charleston, wherehe was also the institution's first African American athlete and recipient of afull basketball scholarship; andWhereas, his pioneeringachievements led to his induction into the College of Charleston Hall of Famein 1994, recognition as a desegregation pioneer in 2008, and numerous honorsfor leadership, courage, and perseverance in overcoming racial barriers; andWhereas, ReverendHarper enjoyed a distinguished career with General Motors AcceptanceCorporation, becoming the first African American promoted to supervisory andmanagement positions within the Charleston Branch; andWhereas, he faithfullyanswered the call to ministry, serving as pastor of Shiloh AME Church and Mt.Carmel AME Church, secretary of the Palmetto Annual Conference, and currentlyas Presiding Elder of the Kingstree District, Palmetto Annual Conference of theAfrican Methodist Episcopal Church; andWhereas, his commitmentto community service has included leadership roles with educational, civic,healthcare, and cultural organizations throughout South Carolina; andWhereas, in recognitionof his exemplary influence, leadership, and service, he was selected to carrythe Olympic Torch during the 2001 Olympic Relay in Charleston; andWhereas, he is blessedto share his life with his wife, the former Tanya Trescott, and is the proudfather of two sons and grandfather of five cherished grandchildren; andWhereas, ReverendHarper is widely respected as an encourager, a pioneer, and a leader whosehumility, humor, faith, and service have positively impacted countless livesthroughout South Carolina and beyond.
