A house RESOLUTION
to recognize and honor the Reverend Remus Harper Jr.
upon the occassion of his retirement after forty years of exemplary ministry,
and to wish him continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors.
Whereas, the South
Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to honor Reverend Remus Harper Jr.
on his upcoming retirement from the ministry in September 2026; and
Whereas, Reverend Remus
Harper Jr. a native of North Charleston, is the son of the late Remus Harper
Sr. and Annabelle Stewart Harper. He has distinguished himself as a trailblazer
in education, athletics, business, ministry, and community service; and
Whereas, he graduated
as valedictorian and basketball team captain from Bonds Wilson High School in
1968 and, in 1972, became the first African American to earn a Bachelor of
Science degree in Business Administration from the College of Charleston, where
he was also the institution's first African American athlete and recipient of a
full basketball scholarship; and
Whereas, his pioneering
achievements led to his induction into the College of Charleston Hall of Fame
in 1994, recognition as a desegregation pioneer in 2008, and numerous honors
for leadership, courage, and perseverance in overcoming racial barriers; and
Whereas, Reverend
Harper enjoyed a distinguished career with General Motors Acceptance
Corporation, becoming the first African American promoted to supervisory and
management positions within the Charleston Branch; and
Whereas, he faithfully
answered the call to ministry, serving as pastor of Shiloh AME Church and Mt.
Carmel AME Church, secretary of the Palmetto Annual Conference, and currently
as Presiding Elder of the Kingstree District, Palmetto Annual Conference of the
African Methodist Episcopal Church; and
Whereas, his commitment
to community service has included leadership roles with educational, civic,
healthcare, and cultural organizations throughout South Carolina; and
Whereas, in recognition
of his exemplary influence, leadership, and service, he was selected to carry
the Olympic Torch during the 2001 Olympic Relay in Charleston; and
Whereas, he is blessed
to share his life with his wife, the former Tanya Trescott, and is the proud
father of two sons and grandfather of five cherished grandchildren; and
Whereas, Reverend
Harper is widely respected as an encourager, a pioneer, and a leader whose
humility, humor, faith, and service have positively impacted countless lives
throughout South Carolina and beyond. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the
South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and
honor the Reverend Remus Harper Jr. upon the occasion of his retirement after
forty years of exemplary ministry, and wish him continued success and happiness
in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved
that a copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend Remus Harper Jr.
