                            A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing the week of October 4 through 10, 2026, as "Fire
2    Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania.
3    WHEREAS, Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally
4 and nationally and homes are the locations where people are at
5 greatest risk from fire; and
6    WHEREAS, Home fires killed more than 2,800 people in the
7 United States in 2021, according to the National Fire Protection
8 Association® (NFPA), and fire departments in the United States
9 responded to 338,000 home fires; and
10    WHEREAS, In 2024, the Consumer Product Safety Commission
11 recalled 132,000 Baseus magnetic power banks due to overheating
12 issues resulting in 39 fires and 13 burn injuries; and
13    WHEREAS, The NFPA recommends only using intact and certified
14 chargers as damaged or knockoff chargers are more likely to
15 overheat and explode; and
16    WHEREAS, The NFPA recommends unplugging devices when fully
17 charged and to store battery-powered devices in cool, dry places
1 to minimize fire risk; and
2    WHEREAS, It is highly recommended to never throw lithium-ion
3 batteries in the trash and instead check for a local recycling
4 program as this can result in major trash fires; and
5    WHEREAS, Residents who have planned and practiced a home fire
6 escape plan are more prepared and therefore are more likely to
7 survive a fire; and
8    WHEREAS, Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in
9 reported home fires almost in half; and
10    WHEREAS, Pennsylvania residents who are responsive to public
11 education measures are able to take personal steps to increase
12 their safety from fire, especially in their homes; and
13    WHEREAS, The 2026 "Fire Prevention Week" theme, "Charge into
14 Fire Safety. Safe Charging Is a Superpower," effectively serves
15 to remind us to stay alert and engage in best practices when
16 handling chargers and batteries; and
17    WHEREAS, Promoting this theme provides an ideal opportunity
18 to educate the public of the dangers fire poses in mishandling
19 batteries and chargers throughout this Commonwealth; and
20    WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's first responders exhibit great
21 dedication to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home
22 fire injuries through prevention and protection education and
23 through their quick response to emergencies; therefore be it
24    RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
25 week of October 4 through 10, 2026, as "Fire Prevention Week" in
26 Pennsylvania; and be it further
27    RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
28 residents, landlords and businesses to protect their property by
29 heeding the important safety messages of "Fire Prevention Week"
30 which can be found on the publicly accessible Internet website

1 of the National Fire Protection Association®; and be it further
2    RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend all
3 firefighters, other first responders and all who provide support
4 for their efforts to prevent, fight and stop fires.
