                             A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing the month of August 2026 as "Appendix Cancer
2    Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
3    WHEREAS, Appendix cancer, also known as appendiceal cancer,
4 is a rare but serious disease, affecting approximately two to
5 nine people per million each year in the United States; and
6    WHEREAS, Although appendix cancer is genetically distinct
7 from colorectal cancer, its incidence has been rising
8 significantly in recent years, particularly among individuals
9 under 50 years of age; and
10    WHEREAS, Due in part to its rarity, appendix cancer is often
11 misunderstood and can be difficult to diagnose, resulting in
12 frequent delays or misdiagnoses that may negatively impact
13 patient outcomes and quality of life; and
14    WHEREAS, Symptoms of appendix cancer may be vague or absent
15 in early stages and many individuals are not diagnosed until the
16 disease has advanced, making treatment more complex and
17 challenging; and
18    WHEREAS, Treatment for appendix cancer varies based on type
1 and stage, and may include surgery, chemotherapy and other
2 therapies, underscoring the importance of early detection and
3 increased awareness; and
4    WHEREAS, The Appendix Cancer PMP Research Foundation, founded
5 in 2008, works to fund research and education to improve the
6 diagnosis and treatment of appendix cancer and pseudomyxoma
7 peritonei; and
8    WHEREAS, Patients, survivors, caregivers, health care
9 professionals, advocates and organizations across the country
10 are working together to raise awareness, support research and
11 improve outcomes for those affected by appendix cancer;
12 therefore be it
13    RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of August 2026
14 as "Appendix Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and urge
15 all Pennsylvanians to be aware of this serious disease, take
16 steps to promote early detection and work toward a cure.
