Document has been reformatted to meet World Wide Web specifications.)A concurrent RESOLUTIONTO DECLARE THEMONTH OF APRIL 2025 AS "DISTRACTED DRIVER AWARENESS MONTH" THROUGHOUT OUR STATEAND TO ENCOURAGE ALL SOUTH CAROLINA CITIZENS TO PRACTICE SAFE DRIVING BEHAVIORSAND PLEDGE TO DRIVE DISTRACTION FREE.Whereas, 1,048 SouthCarolinians lost their lives due to motor vehicle crashes in 2023, including126 motorcyclists; 27 powered cycles, other than motorcycles; 26 pedalcyclists;and 186 pedestrians; andWhereas, talking on a mobilephone, even when done while it is in "hands free" mode; texting; or programminga dashboard infotainment system or Global Positioning System device divertsdrivers' attention away from safe driving and results in physical, manual, andcognitive distraction; andWhereas, South Carolinacontinues to have the highest number of fatalities in the United States permiles driven, and all South Carolinians deserve to live and work in safecommunities; andWhereas, the NationalSafety Council Southeastern Chapter, South Carolina Trucking Association,Palmetto Cycling Coalition, ABATE of South Carolina, State Farm InsuranceCompanies, and the South Carolina Motorcycle Safety Task Force work to promotepolicies, practices, and procedures leading to increased safety, protection,and health in business and industry, in schools and colleges, on roads andhighways, and in homes and communities across South Carolina; andWhereas, spring is atime of year when people begin to log more miles on our roads, and it istherefore imperative to focus attention on motor vehicle safety to preventinjuries, death, and other losses in South Carolina.
