4 SJR___ COMMENDING THE ALABAMA CHAPTERS OF THE DAUGHTERS OF
5 THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN
6 REVOLUTION.

8WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the
9 Legislature of Alabama commend those estimable organizations
10 that diligently strive to promote patriotism, preserve
11 American history, and support excellence in education for
12 our Nation's children; and
13WHEREAS, among such distinguished service
14 organizations working within local communities throughout
15 this state are the Alabama Society, Daughters of the
16 American Revolution (ASDAR), and the Alabama Society Sons of
17 the American Revolution (ALSSAR); and
18WHEREAS, the ASDAR was established in 1894 and today
19 consists of more than 4,000 members serving in 71 chapters
20 across the State of Alabama; it is affiliated with the
21 National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution
22 (DAR), a nonprofit, nonpolitical women's service
23 organization comprised of more than 185,000 members
24 nationwide; both the state and national societies are
25 steadfastly committed to the enduring mission of historic
26 preservation, education, and patriotism; and
27WHEREAS, members of the ASDAR generously volunteer
28 their time and talents in numerous laudable community

29 activities aligned with this mission, including erecting
30 monuments, preserving historical records, providing
31 financial support to Veterans, preparing care packages for
32 residents of Veterans Affairs nursing homes, and sponsoring
33 the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest for
34 deserving high school seniors; and
35WHEREAS, the ASDAR is especially commended for
36 founding and sustaining the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in
37 Grant, Alabama, which was established in 1924 to provide
38 educational opportunities for children in an isolated,
39 rural, and economically disadvantaged region of the state;
40 through continuous funding, construction, and unwavering
41 support over the years, the ASDAR has ensured the school's
42 ongoing success, and today the school proudly serves more
43 than 1,300 students; and
44WHEREAS, the ALSSAR is the state-level organization
45 of the National Society of the Sons of the American
46 Revolution, a highly respected national organization whose
47 members are able to document lineage to patriots who
48 supported the cause of American independence during the
49 Revolutionary War; the organization is dedicated to
50 fostering education, inspiration, and reverence for the
51 principles and ideals that guided the Founding Fathers; and
52WHEREAS, through a wide array of meaningful
53 activities, the ALSSAR commemorates significant
54 anniversaries of the Revolutionary era, acquires and
55 preserves important historical records, documents, relics,
56 and landmarks, and promotes fellowship and unity among the

57 descendants of American patriots; and
58WHEREAS, the ALSSAR further advances the purposes set
59 forth in the Preamble to the Constitution of the United
60 States by sponsoring programs that recognize outstanding
61 academic achievement, exemplary public service, and
62 meaningful community involvement, while emphasizing the
63 enduring American ideals of patriotism and freedom; now
64 therefore,
65BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
66 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we hereby commend and honor
67 the Alabama Society, Daughters of the American Revolution
68 and the Alabama Society Sons of the American Revolution for
69 their outstanding service to the State of Alabama and the
70 Nation; applaud their enduring legacy of dedication to
71 patriotic, educational, and historical endeavors; and extend
72 our sincere best wishes for their continued success in all
73 future undertakings.
