4 SJR___ RECOGNIZING THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED
5 STATES POSTAL SERVICE.

7WHEREAS, on July 26, 1775, the Second Continental
8 Congress founded the first national postal service to
9 facilitate secure communication between the Continental
10 Army, Congress, and citizens during the American Revolution;
11 and
12WHEREAS, the importance of a postal service is
13 recognized in the Constitution, which gave Congress the
14 power to establish post offices and post roads; and
15WHEREAS, the postal service has grown from 75 post
16 offices in the original 13 colonies to more than 30,000
17 locations in every corner of the United States; and
18WHEREAS, the postal service holds a unique place in
19 the history of the United States and in the hearts of the
20 people; and
21WHEREAS, the postal service embodies the spirit of
22 innovation, determination, longevity, and resilience of the
23 United States; and
24WHEREAS, the postal service has facilitated commerce
25 and united the United States; and
26WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service was
27 established as an independent establishment of the Federal
28 Government in 1971; and

29WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service provides
30 individuals in every community across the United States with
31 universal and open access to its delivery network; and
32WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service remains a
33 vital part of the critical infrastructure of the United
34 States through the delivery of mail and package services six
35 days each week to 168,600,000 delivery points; and
36WHEREAS, the Legislature of Alabama recognizes the
37 historic significance of the 250th anniversary of the
38 founding of the postal service and honors the men and women
39 who served and continue to serve as employees of the postal
40 service; now therefore,
41BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
42 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we celebrate 250 years of
43 service by the postal service to the people of the United
44 States and look forward to another 250 years of service.
45BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we invite the people of
46 Alabama to join in celebration of the 250th Anniversary of
47 the postal service by writing a letter, buying stamps, or
48 recognizing a postal employee.
