hm8/enrolled.txt1A MEMORIAL2 HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF REVEREND DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER3 KING, JR.45WHEREAS, during the week of January 12 through January6 19, 2026, the people of New Mexico will commemorate the life7 and legacy of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.8 throughout the state as part of the "Dream Week"9 commemorations organized by the Martin Luther King, Jr.10 commission, which was created by act of the legislature in11 1991; and12WHEREAS, the theme for the observance of the 2026 Martin13 Luther King, Jr. holiday is "Mission Possible Two: Building14 Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way"; and15WHEREAS, "Dream Week 2026" will feature events,16 celebrations and moments of service designed to uplift Dr.17 King's ideals and bring New Mexico communities together18 statewide; and19WHEREAS, Dr. King was awarded the 1964 Nobel peace prize20 for his leadership in the nonviolent struggle for civil21 rights and the passage of landmark civil rights legislation;22 and23WHEREAS, through his life, Dr. King left a blueprint to24 follow for the achievement of both personal excellence and25 realization of "the beloved community", where there is peace, HM 8Page 11 love, respect and equality for all; and2WHEREAS, it is important to honor Dr. King's teaching3 that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere";4 and5WHEREAS, the diverse communities of New Mexico reflect6 the beautiful multicultural vision of Dr. King's dream; and7WHEREAS, New Mexico is committed to civil rights and8 equality for all; and9WHEREAS, Dr. King's philosophy of social justice and10 nonviolence remains essential for addressing contemporary11 challenges and building unity in communities;12NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF13 REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the life and14 legacy of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. be15 commemorated and honored; and16BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be17 transmitted to the governor, the president pro tempore of the18 senate, the speaker of the house of representatives, the chair19 of the African American legislative day council and the20 executive director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. commission.
