2  HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF REVEREND DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER
3  KING, JR.

5WHEREAS, during the week of January 12 through January
6  19, 2026, the people of New Mexico will commemorate the life
7  and legacy of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.
8  throughout the state as part of the "Dream Week"
9  commemorations organized by the Martin Luther King, Jr.
10 commission, which was created by act of the legislature in
11 1991; and
12WHEREAS, the theme for the observance of the 2026 Martin
13 Luther King, Jr. holiday is "Mission Possible Two:   Building
14 Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way"; and
15WHEREAS, "Dream Week 2026" will feature events,
16 celebrations and moments of service designed to uplift Dr.
17 King's ideals and bring New Mexico communities together
18 statewide; and
19WHEREAS, Dr. King was awarded the 1964 Nobel peace prize
20 for his leadership in the nonviolent struggle for civil
21 rights and the passage of landmark civil rights legislation;
22 and
23WHEREAS, through his life, Dr. King left a blueprint to
24 follow for the achievement of both personal excellence and
25 realization of "the beloved community", where there is peace,    HM 8

1  love, respect and equality for all; and
2WHEREAS, it is important to honor Dr. King's teaching
3  that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere";
4  and
5WHEREAS, the diverse communities of New Mexico reflect
6  the beautiful multicultural vision of Dr. King's dream; and
7WHEREAS, New Mexico is committed to civil rights and
8  equality for all; and
9WHEREAS, Dr. King's philosophy of social justice and
10 nonviolence remains essential for addressing contemporary
11 challenges and building unity in communities;
12NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
13 REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the life and
14 legacy of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. be
15 commemorated and honored; and
16BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
17 transmitted to the governor, the president pro tempore of the
18 senate, the speaker of the house of representatives, the chair
19 of the African American legislative day council and the
20 executive director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. commission.    HM 8
