Dexter on hercentennial birthday.(H.C.R.191)Offered by Representative Durfee of ShaftsburyOffered by Senators Bongartz and PlunkettWhereas, Doris Dexter was born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 3, 1926, and as ayoung girl she was a loyal Tigers’ baseball fan who idolized power-hitting first basemanHank Greenberg, andWhereas, a graduate of Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan, during WorldWar II she followed in the footsteps of the legendary Rosie the Riveter, working nightswelding tanks at a local Cadillac automotive plant, andWhereas, a passionate student, Doris Dexter graduated from Michigan StateUniversity, and she worked at the university’s library, oblivious to the football mania thatengulfed the campus, andWhereas, Doris Dexter’s scholarly dedication resulted in a scholarship to study Frenchat the Sorbonne in Paris, France, and she earned a master’s degree at the University ofWisconsin, andWhereas, her six children, whom she and her husband raised in Rochester, New York,and more recently her eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, have held centerstage in her life, andWhereas, fluent in several languages, Doris Dexter spent time in Egypt, Greece, andItaly, and later in life enjoyed Elderhostel travel excursions, andWhereas, Doris Dexter has an abiding concern for Americans’ civil rights, which sheacted upon as a volunteer at the ACLU and the Monroe Citizens for Public Education &Religious Liberty (MCPEARL), andWhereas, her musical talents are beautifully exhibited as a classical pianist, andthrough decades of singing with choral organizations and church choirs in Rochester,New York, and following her 2004 move to Shaftsbury, with the Bennington CountyChorale Society, andWhereas, until recent years, Doris Dexter regularly walked several miles a day, andWhereas, Doris Dexter has been joyfully engaged in many aspects of life in thecommunities where she has resided, now therefore be itResolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:That the General Assembly congratulates Doris G.
