1    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Don Fischer.
2  Whereas, Known as the "Voice of the Hoosiers", Don Fischer
3 has been the play-by-play voice of Indiana University men's
4 basketball and football since 1973, when he was 26 years old;
5   Whereas, During that time, he's called more than 2,000
6 games, five NCAA basketball Final Fours, four NCAA
7 basketball championship games, two NIT championship games,
8 and 12 bowl contests, serving as the voice that IU fans trust for
9 over 50 years;
10   Whereas, Don Fischer is one of the most respected and highly
11 decorated play-by-play announcers in all of college sports.
12 During his years of work in Indiana, Fischer has been named
13 the state's Sportscaster of the Year 32 times by two different
14 organizations. The National Sports Media Association has
15 honored him 28 times while the Indiana Sportswriters and
16 Sportscasters Association has named him their honoree four
17 times, and in 2022, he was awarded the prestigious National
18 Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's Chris
19 Schenkel Award. He was inducted into the Indiana
20 Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in
21 2004 and, in 2010, was voted into the Indiana Broadcasters
22 Association Hall of Fame;
23   Whereas, Don Fischer was also awarded the Indiana
24 University Bicentennial Award in 2019 in recognition of his
25 enormous contributions to Indiana University and IU Athletics,
26 and he was honored by Indiana University with the J.W. Bill
27 Orwig Medal, which goes to non-alumni for distinguished

1 service to the university;
2   Whereas, Don Fischer got his start as an announcer at
3 WBOW in Terre Haute, Indiana, becoming the station's sports
4 director and calling as many as 175 high school and college
5 games per year from 1970 to 1973;
6   Whereas, Along with being the iconic broadcaster for Indiana
7 University teams, Don Fischer worked for ABC Radio,
8 Canada's CBC, and several other major market radio stations,
9 including WIRE in Indianapolis, where he covered the
10 Indianapolis 500. During those 14 years, he also served as
11 sports director for Indianapolis radio station WIRE and
12 Network Indiana, a statewide news network;
13   Whereas, As an independent contractor, Fischer served as the
14 Indianapolis Colts' preseason television anchor for 23 years,
15 from 1995-2017. In addition, the City of Indianapolis and the
16 State of Indiana have each honored him with a special
17 "Recognition Day" for his service and broadcasting skills;
18  Whereas, Don Fischer was the voice behind both the 1976
19 Hoosiers undefeated basketball season and the 2026 Hoosiers
20 undefeated football season; and
21   Whereas, For over 53 years, Don Fischer's voice has been
22 synonymous with Indiana athletics, making radio listeners feel
23 as though they are actually at the games: Therefore,
24Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
25of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
26the Senate concurring:
27    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors Don
28 Fischer and congratulates him on 53 years as the Indiana
29 University men's basketball and football play-by-play
30 broadcaster.
31    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
32 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
33 Representative Peggy Mayfield for distribution.
