hcr0022/introduced.txt*HC1018*Introduced VersionHOUSE CONCURRENTRESOLUTION No. ____DIGEST OF INTRODUCED RESOLUTIONA CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Don Fischer.Mayfield, Heaton, Hall, Pierce M_______________________, read first time and referred to Committee on202624082026 HC 1018/DI 140IntroducedSecond Regular Session of the 124th General Assembly (2026)HOUSE CONCURRENTRESOLUTION No. ____1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Don Fischer.2 Whereas, Known as the "Voice of the Hoosiers", Don Fischer3 has been the play-by-play voice of Indiana University men's4 basketball and football since 1973, when he was 26 years old;5 Whereas, During that time, he's called more than 2,0006 games, five NCAA basketball Final Fours, four NCAA7 basketball championship games, two NIT championship games,8 and 12 bowl contests, serving as the voice that IU fans trust for9 over 50 years;10 Whereas, Don Fischer is one of the most respected and highly11 decorated play-by-play announcers in all of college sports.12 During his years of work in Indiana, Fischer has been named13 the state's Sportscaster of the Year 32 times by two different14 organizations. The National Sports Media Association has15 honored him 28 times while the Indiana Sportswriters and16 Sportscasters Association has named him their honoree four17 times, and in 2022, he was awarded the prestigious National18 Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's Chris19 Schenkel Award. He was inducted into the Indiana20 Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in21 2004 and, in 2010, was voted into the Indiana Broadcasters22 Association Hall of Fame;23 Whereas, Don Fischer was also awarded the Indiana24 University Bicentennial Award in 2019 in recognition of his25 enormous contributions to Indiana University and IU Athletics,26 and he was honored by Indiana University with the J.W. Bill27 Orwig Medal, which goes to non-alumni for distinguished2026 HC 1018/DI 14021 service to the university;2 Whereas, Don Fischer got his start as an announcer at3 WBOW in Terre Haute, Indiana, becoming the station's sports4 director and calling as many as 175 high school and college5 games per year from 1970 to 1973;6 Whereas, Along with being the iconic broadcaster for Indiana7 University teams, Don Fischer worked for ABC Radio,8 Canada's CBC, and several other major market radio stations,9 including WIRE in Indianapolis, where he covered the10 Indianapolis 500. During those 14 years, he also served as11 sports director for Indianapolis radio station WIRE and12 Network Indiana, a statewide news network;13 Whereas, As an independent contractor, Fischer served as the14 Indianapolis Colts' preseason television anchor for 23 years,15 from 1995-2017. In addition, the City of Indianapolis and the16 State of Indiana have each honored him with a special17 "Recognition Day" for his service and broadcasting skills;18 Whereas, Don Fischer was the voice behind both the 197619 Hoosiers undefeated basketball season and the 2026 Hoosiers20 undefeated football season; and21 Whereas, For over 53 years, Don Fischer's voice has been22 synonymous with Indiana athletics, making radio listeners feel23 as though they are actually at the games: Therefore,24Be it resolved by the House of Representatives25of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,26the Senate concurring:27 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors Don28 Fischer and congratulates him on 53 years as the Indiana29 University men's basketball and football play-by-play30 broadcaster.31 SECTION 2.
