1    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing Lee
2 Herbert Hamilton.
3    Whereas, Lee Herbert Hamilton was born in Daytona
4 Beach, Florida, on April 20, 1931, and later moved to Indiana,
5 where he spent the rest of his life;
6     Whereas, Hamilton graduated from Evansville Central
7 High School in 1948, and won the Arthur L. Trester award for
8 his excellence in basketball;
9     Whereas, Hamilton graduated with a degree in history from
10 DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, continuing his
11 outstanding basketball career which earned him a spot in the
12 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982;
13     Whereas, While in college, Hamilton was deeply involved
14 in student government, serving on the school's Council on
15 Religious Life and in the Methodist Student Movement, where
16 he met his lifelong partner, Nancy Ann Nelson, who passed
17 away in 2012;
18    Whereas, After a year of study at the Goethe University in
19 Germany, he graduated from the Indiana University School of
20 Law in 1956, which led him into private practice;
21    Whereas, He served as the chairman of the Bartholomew
22 County Citizens, treasurer of the Bartholomew County Young
23 Democrats from 1960-1963, and President from 1963-1964;

1     Whereas, Hamilton began his thirty-four-year career in the
2 House of Representatives in 1965, serving Indiana's 9th District
3 until 1999;
4    Whereas, Hamilton received the title "Outstanding
5 Freshman Congressman" from the Capitol Hill Young
6 Democratic Club during his first year;
7     Whereas, His ardent committee work, effectiveness, and
8 responsiveness to constituents were displayed all through his
9 time serving in committees such as the Committee on Standards
10 of Official Conduct, Select Committee on Ethics, Commission
11 on Administrative Review, Permanent Select Committee on
12 Intelligence, and Committee on Science, Space, and
13 Technology;
14     Whereas, As his vision in national and international affairs
15 grew, he became a supporter of legislation promoting
16 democracy, ethics, administrative, organizational, and market
17 reforms;
18     Whereas, Upon leaving Congress in 1999, Hamilton
19 became director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center
20 for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and established the Center
21 on Congress at Indiana University, which he directed;
22     Whereas, He was also appointed as a member of the
23 advisory council for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
24 in 2001, and from December 2002 through August 2004 served
25 as Vice Chair of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks
26 Upon the United States (9/11 Commission);
27      Whereas, Lee Hamilton passed away on February 3,2026,
28 at the age of 94 and he is survived by his three children, Tracy
29 Lynn, Deborah Lee, and Douglas Nelson, and his five
30 grandchildren: Therefore,
31Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
32of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
33concurring:

1      SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly expresses
2 its sympathy and deepest condolences to the family of Lee
3 Herbert Hamilton.
4      SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
5 to transmit two copies of this Resolution to the family of Lee
6 Herbert Hamilton.
