SENATE RESOLUTION No. 1735
A RESOLUTION recognizing and commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Jayhawk Theatre,
the official State Theater of Kansas.
WHEREAS, The Historic Jayhawk Theatre, located in Topeka, Kansas, first opened its doors on August 16,
1926; and
WHEREAS, For 50 years, the Jayhawk Theatre served as a vibrant gathering place for Kansans, hosting
performances, films, community events and arts programming that embodied the state's history and heritage; and
WHEREAS, Recognized for its architectural character and historic significance to our state, the Jayhawk
Theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and is a contributing property within the South
Kansas Avenue Commercial Historic District; and
WHEREAS, In 1993, the Jayhawk Theatre was designated as the official State Theater of Kansas by a
resolution of the Kansas Legislature; and
WHEREAS, The Jayhawk Theatre stands as an important historic and cultural landmark in Kansas; and
WHEREAS, Historic theaters across Kansas sustain the state's historic character and vibrant community life,
and the Jayhawk Theatre remains among these treasured institutions; and
WHEREAS, The continued preservation and restoration of the Jayhawk Theatre represent a major
collaborative effort among community partners, preservation advocates and local supporters to advance historic
preservation, downtown revitalization, tourism and economic development in the capital city of Topeka and
throughout the state of Kansas; and
WHEREAS, The year 2026 marks the centennial anniversary of the Jayhawk Theatre, a landmark that has
long contributed meaningfully to the civic and cultural fabric of Kansas: Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Kansas: That we recognize and commemorate the 100th anniversary of
the Jayhawk Theatre, the official State Theater of Kansas, and extend our appreciation to all those who have
preserved and supported this historic landmark for the benefit of present and future generations; and
Be it further resolved: That the Secretary of the Senate shall send an enrolled copy of this resolution to the
Historic Jayhawk Theatre and Senator Dietrich.
