A house RESOLUTION
to honor and RECOGNIZE THE Greenville Garden CLUB
upON THE OCCASION OF ITS CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY AND to WISH THE CLUB and its
members MANY MORE YEARS OF CONTINUED SUCCESS.
Whereas, at a luncheon
on November 4, 2026, members of the Greenville Garden Club will mark the one
hundredth anniversary of their founding. Established in 1926 and federated with
the National Garden Clubs in 1933, the Greenville Garden Club is also
affiliated with the South Atlantic Region, Garden Club of South Carolina, West
Piedmont District, and the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs; and
Whereas, the Greenville
Garden Club strives to stimulate and encourage gardening practices among
amateur gardeners and foster knowledge and appreciation of horticulture, aid in
the protection of the natural environment, provide instruction on indoor
gardening and floral design, and promote garden therapy and residential
gardening; and
Whereas, many years
ago, upon receiving a grant from Better Homes and Gardens, the members
purchased trees and established Greenville's first arboretum at the Spring
House in Falls Park. Now,
every year they participate in the Greenville
Council of Garden Club's annual Arbor Day celebration by planting a tree in one
of the gardens that they help to maintain. They also put on horticulture
exhibits to help promote the love and knowledge of horticulture, providing a
minimum of five horticultor shows at club meetings every year; and
Whereas, the club
educates its members in providing a habitat for wildlife and encourages them to
have their yards certified. They also provide education about birds, their
feeding habits and habitat, as well as providing club members with written
materials on various gardening subjects. The Greenville Council of Garden Clubs
representative keeps the club informed of council activities and encourages
club members to support and participate in the council. The members actively participate
in flower show schools, landscape design schools, garden study courses, and
environmental workshops; and
Whereas, the club helps
provide the joy of gardening and blooming plants to shut-ins and nursing home
patients with garden therapy, as well as teaching children in the community
about gardens, what they can grow and how to encourage pollinators. Every year
they like to put on a poinsettia sale and a fashion show for their community;
and
Whereas, the club supports
Plant America and historic preservation. They encourage members to become life
members of the National Garden Club and support their objectives by sending delegates
to national conventions, observe National Garden Week, and give financial
support through the sale of National Garden Club calendars and The National
Gardener magazine; and
Whereas, the Garden
Club of South Carolina encourages members to support scholarships by becoming life
members. They send delegates to conventions, support the objectives of the
Garden Club of South Carolina, and send campers to Camp Wildwood. The club
supports many organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Woodland Elementary School,
and The Legacy at Southpointe Drive assisted living facility; and
Whereas, in the
Greenville community, the club maintains the gardens surrounding the patio off
the kitchen at Kilgore-Lewis House. The members work with Habitat for Humanity
to provide plants for new homes in the community. The club created the Rock
Quarry Garden in 1926 and today they work with the parks and recreation department
to maintain the garden and keep it safe for the community; and
Whereas, through
fundraising, educational programing, and dedication to beautification projects,
the Greenville Garden Club has, for one hundred years, graciously benefited and
enhanced the life of the entire Greenville community and the State of South
Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the
South Carolina House of Representatives,
by this resolution, honor and recognize the Greenville Garden Club upon the
occasion of its centennial anniversary and wish the club and its members many
more years of continued success.
Be it further resolved
that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Greenville Garden Club.
