hcr1029/amended.txt1HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES - FLOOR VERSION2STATE OF OKLAHOMA32nd Session of the 60th Legislature (2026)4 HOUSE CONCURRENTRESOLUTION 1029 By: Munson and Pae of the House5and6Kirt of the Senate78910AS INTRODUCED11A Resolution honoring May as Asian/Pacific AmericanHeritage Month; recognizing the cultural and economic12impact of Asian/Pacific Americans and immigrants; andhonoring Oklahomans of Asian/Pacific descent.131415 WHEREAS, May is recognized by the United States Congress as16 Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, honoring the contributions17 and paying tribute to generations of Asian Americans and Pacific18 Islanders (AAPI) who have made our state and nation their home; and19 WHEREAS, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in20 May to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the21 United States in May of 1843; and22 WHEREAS, May also marks the anniversary of the completion of the23 transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of those24 who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants; andHCR1029 HFLR Page 1BOLD FACE denotes Committee Amendments.1WHEREAS, the Chinese were the first Asian group to settle in2 Oklahoma, living in the Guthrie Territory after the Land Run of3 1889; and4WHEREAS, the Japanese population quickly grew in Oklahoma in the5 1920s and 1940s, and during World War II, several fought for the6 United States, including four sons of Kutaro Nishimuta, a farmer in7 Payne County. His sons served in the U.S. Army 442nd Regimental8 Unit, an all-Japanese outfit and one of the most decorated units in9 the war; and10 WHEREAS, nearly three percent of all Oklahomans identify as11 Asian American or Pacific Islander, citing origins in Cambodia,12 China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine13 Islands, Thailand, Vietnam, Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific14 Islands; and15 WHEREAS, Oklahoma City is home to "Little Saigon", the Asian16 District made up of the state's largest population of Asian17 descendants, predominately Vietnamese.
