hr322/enrolled.txtHOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 322Reps. Glanville,Alexander, Breen, Dievendorf, Kelly, Longjohn, Paiz, Rheingans, Witwer andXiong offered the following resolution:A resolution to declare May 20, 2026,as Stroke Awareness Day in the state of Michigan.Whereas, This day serves as a time to remember the millions ofpeople and their loved ones who have been affected by one of the nation’sleading causes of death and long-term disability; andWhereas, It is also a time to recognize the modernadvancements and medical innovations that are making it more possible forpatients to survive and regain independence following a stroke; andWhereas, According to the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention, nearly 800,000 people in the United States experience a stroke eachyear; andWhereas, Every 40 seconds someone in the United States has astroke, and tragically, every three and a half minutes someone dies from astroke; andWhereas, A stroke impacts not only the patient, but theirfamily as they adjust to the recovery of their loved one and the side effectsand long-lasting symptoms of surviving a stroke; andWhereas, There are two different types of strokes: an ischemicstroke and a hemorrhagic stroke; andWhereas, The most common type of stroke is an ischemic stroke.A severe ischemic stroke, such as Emergent Large Vessel Occlusion (ELVO),occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the major arteries of the brain, restricting the flow of blood and oxygen and killing up to two million braincells per minute; andWhereas, A hemorrhagic stroke happens when an artery in thebrain is ruptured and the leaked blood puts pressure on brain cells and damagesthem; andWhereas, One of the most promising advancements in treatmentfor strokes today is mechanical thrombectomy. Also known as endovasculartherapy, it is a minimally invasive procedure through which the blood clotresponsible for the most severe form of stroke is located and removed, restoring blood flow to the brain. It is truly a revolutionary procedureperformed by highly trained neurointerventional care teams at Level 1 strokecenters located throughout our state; andWhereas, Studies have shown that for every five minutes savedwhen a critical stroke patient obtains the lifesaving care they need, they willexperience an additional month of life without disability; and now, therefore,be itResolved by the House of Representatives, That the members ofthis legislative body declare May 20, 2026, as Stroke Awareness Day in the stateof Michigan.
