HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 392
BY REPRESENTATIVE WALTERS
  A RESOLUTION
To recognize the importance of solemnity, remembrance, and respect on Memorial Day.
       WHEREAS, Memorial Day is the foremost annual day to mourn and honor the
deceased service men and women of the United States of America; and
       WHEREAS, the "Memorial Day Act" was issued on May 5, 1868, to formally
establish a Decoration Day on which Americans would remember its war dead and decorate
their graves with flowers; and
       WHEREAS, Decoration Day became known as Memorial Day and continued
through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as an informal patriotic holiday;
after World War I, the day was expanded to honor those who died in all American wars; and
       WHEREAS, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, enacted in 1968 and made effective
in 1971, designated Memorial Day as a national holiday and established its commemoration
on the last Monday in May; and
       WHEREAS, Memorial Day is an opportunity for American citizens to solemnly
honor and remember the courageous service men and women who have given their lives to
protect the freedoms they enjoy.
       THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize the importance of solemnity, remembrance,
and respect on Memorial Day and does hereby encourage citizens to honor fallen United
States service members with the utmost reverence and sincerity.
