WASHINGTON (7News) — A man wanted in connection with a deadly July stabbing in Northwest Washington, D.C. was arrested Sunday during an encounter in which a D.C. police officer fatally shot a dog, authorities said.
Andrew Tyree Richardson, 25, of Northwest Washington, D.C., was arrested around 9:43 a.m. by Metropolitan Police Department officers in the 1300 block of Columbia Rd NW in Columbia Heights.
Police said a dog emerged from a different residence and charged at officers after they had taken Richardson into custody. One officer discharged an electronic control device (Taser), but police said it did not stop the dog.
A second officer then fired his handgun, striking the dog. The animal died from its injuries, police said.
No officers or suspects were injured during the encounter.
Richardson was wanted in connection with the July 11 stabbing death of 56-year-old Charles Sharp of Northwest Washington, D.C.
Third District officers responded around 12:52 a.m. to the 2900 block of 14th Street NW after receiving a report of a stabbing. They found Sharp suffering from a stab wound.
D.C. Fire and EMS personnel pronounced Sharp dead at the scene.
Richardson was arrested under a D.C. Superior Court warrant and charged with second-degree murder while armed, police said. He also faces charges of first-degree burglary and possession of a BB gun in a separate case.
MPD must release body-worn camera footage of the encounter under District law.
The Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team is investigating the officer’s use of deadly force. The unit investigates all shootings involving law enforcement officers in the District.
