Iowa House Democrats back striking Novolex workers in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — All 33 Iowa House Democrats have signed a letter supporting striking United Auto Workers Local 1024 members at the Novolex plant in southwest Cedar Rapids.

The lawmakers called on Novolex to return to the bargaining table, negotiate in good faith and reach an agreement with the workers. The letter says the union is seeking a contract that addresses wages, health care and retirement benefits.

About 50 union members walked off the job July 28 at the Novolex packaging-equipment plant at 2400 Sixth St. SW, formerly known as Pactiv Evergreen. Workers have said they are seeking wages, benefits and retirement offerings they believe better reflect the broader market. Corridor Business Journal

The letter follows an Aug. 5 vote in which the Linn County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution supporting the striking workers in a 2-1 vote.
