ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – The Minnesota House released results Tuesday of its 2026 State Fair Poll, including a question on whether Minnesota voters should be required to show a photo ID to receive a ballot.
Nearly 57% of fairgoers taking part in the Minnesota House State Fair Poll said they do not support voter ID.(KTTC)
Nearly 57% of respondents said no, photo identification should not be required to vote in the state. 37% said yes, it should be required. The remaining 6% said they were undecided or had no opinion on the question.
## Federal legislation pending in Senate
The poll comes as the Trump administration is pushing the U.S. Senate to approve the SAVE America Act ahead of the midterm elections. The legislation, passed by the House, would require a valid photo ID before voters can cast ballots.
The president has said implementing the bill is a top priority to keep future elections from being “rigged,” a claim he has repeatedly made about the 2020 election that has been proven false.
Minnesota is one of 14 states that doesn’t require voter ID. Top election officials have said the SAVE America Act would upend the authority of states to conduct free and fair elections.
## 2012 ballot measure
In 2012, Minnesota voters weighed in on the issue through a proposed constitutional amendment. 52% said they were against requiring photo identification to vote.
At that time, critics said the measure would make voting more difficult for certain groups, while supporters said it was necessary to stop voter fraud.
## About the poll
The Minnesota House poll was taken by more than 9,600 fairgoers. The survey is conducted by the chamber’s nonpartisan Public Information Services and includes issues that may be topics of discussion during the 2027 legislative session.
