New Jersey Senate Republican Leader Anthony Bucco called on Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Tuesday to ask Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell to resign immediately following a New Jersey Globe report that Caldwell is under investigation over allegations of inappropriate behavior involving women and potential ethics violations.
Bucco also called on Sherrill to remain in New Jersey until the matter is resolved, raising concerns about Caldwell serving as acting governor when Sherrill leaves the state.
Under the New Jersey Constitution, the powers and duties of the governor transfer to the lieutenant governor when the governor is absent from the state until the governor returns.
“I believe in due process, but Caldwell resigning would be the best thing for our residents,” Bucco said.
A source previously confirmed to News 12 that former New Jersey Attorney General Chris Porrino and his law firm, Lowenstein Sandler, were retained by the state and have spent several weeks investigating the allegations.
Sherrill said Tuesday that any credible reports of inappropriate behavior or misconduct must be fully examined and that she would take appropriate action if the evidence warrants.
Sherrill did not mention Caldwell by name or specifically reference the investigation in her statement.
