Report: Caldwell denied allegations in letter to state in May

Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell sent a letter to the state’s chief ethics officer in May denying allegations that he used his office to romantically pursue women, according to a BINJE report .

BINJE obtained a copy of Caldwell’s letter.

“I have never asked anyone out on a date, ‘hit on,’ or pursued anyone romantically while conducting official business as Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State,” Caldwell said in his letter to Christina Fullam, the ethics officer. “I take these allegations extremely seriously.”

Caldwell’s letter also hinted that race could be a factor in the allegations against him.

“While I am troubled by this accusation, as the first single Black man to serve at this level in government, I suspect that there will be other false accusations or rumors in the future,” Caldwell wrote. “Unfortunately, in this current political environment, false accusations, especially against people of color, seem to be commonplace.”

In his letter, the lieutenant governor pledged his full cooperation with the probe and expressed a view that “truth, professionalism, facts and integrity ultimately will prevail over rumor, innuendo, and false accusations.”

Caldwell’s letter was dated May 28. He said the letter was dated May 6 and delivered to him on May 26.

The New Jersey Globe first reported Friday that Caldwell is the subject of an internal investigation into inappropriate behavior with women and possible ethics violations, including the purported offer of state jobs.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s administration has retained former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino to lead the internal inquiry.
