No. 8CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONWHEREAS, Texas School for the Deaf alumnus Robert Rives was adedicated educator and a trailblazing figure in the state's deafand hard of hearing community; andWHEREAS, Mr. Rives became the first TSD alumnus to attend theprestigious National College, which is today known as GallaudetUniversity, in Washington, D.C.; following his graduation in 1893,he embarked on a rewarding career as a teacher at TSD that spannedmore than four decades; he also served as the school's firstfootball coach from 1894 to 1898, achieving a record of 10-8-1;among his many honors, he was inducted into the Texas School for theDeaf Alumni Association Hall of Fame in the sports category in 1999;andWHEREAS, Robert Rives continues to be a source of inspirationto young athletes at the Texas School for the Deaf, and the namingof the TSD middle school gymnasium in his honor would be a fittingtribute to his legacy; now, therefore, be itRESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texashereby direct the Texas School for the Deaf to name its middleschool gymnasium the Robert Rives Gymnasium; and, be it furtherRESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an officialcopy of this resolution to the Governing Board of the Texas Schoolfor the Deaf.
