         SENATE RESOLUTION ____
     MR. PRESIDENT:
     I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1    A SENATE RESOLUTION memorializing Reverend Jesse
2 Louis Jackson.
3     Whereas, Reverend Jesse Jackson, global civil rights
4 leader, Baptist minister, and two-time presidential candidate,
5 passed away on February 17, 2026, at the age of 84;
6     Whereas, Rev. Jackson received his bachelor's degree from
7 the Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina in
8 1964;
9    Whereas, Rev. Jackson studied at the Chicago Theological
10 Seminary and became a Baptist minister in 1968;
11    Whereas, Rev. Jackson went on to receive more than 40
12 honorary doctorate degrees;
13      Whereas, Rev. Jackson began his trail-blazing career as a
14 civil rights activist in 1960 by leading a sit-in that integrated
15 the Greenville, South Carolina, Library;
16    Whereas, Rev. Jackson was appointed by the Reverend
17 Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., to coordinate the Chicago

1 Branch of Operation Breadbasket in 1966, an operation which
2 created 4,500 jobs into the Chicago African American
3 community during its six-year operation;
4     Whereas, Rev. Jackson became a vital advisor to Reverend
5 Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., during the height of the civil
6 rights movement which resulted in the passage of the Voting
7 Rights Act of 1965;
8      Whereas, Rev. Jackson went on to fulfill a lifelong battle for
9 civil rights, to include founding the People United to Serve
10 Humanity (PUSH) coalition in 1971 and the National Rainbow
11 Coalition in 1984, which later merged into the Rainbow PUSH
12 coalition in 1996;
13     Whereas, Rev. Jackson was a candidate in two presidential
14 campaigns in 1984 and 1988, running on a platform of equality
15 for all, gaining national support and breaking historical and
16 political barriers; and
17     Whereas, Rev. Jackson is survived by his wife, Jackie; six
18 children, Santita, Jesse Jr., Jonathan, Yusef, Jacqueline, and
19 Ashley; and his grandchildren: Therefore,
20Be it resolved by the Senate of the
21General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
22SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate memorializes
23 Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, an American icon.
24     SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate shall transmit
25 copies of this Resolution to Senator Lonnie Randolph.
