WHEREAS, John Michael Sattgast was born in Ontario, Oregon, to
Herman and Dorothy Sattgast, the youngest child in a blended family
with seven older siblings; and
WHEREAS, He moved to and grew up in the rural community of New
Plymouth, Idaho, where his father was a dairy farmer; and
WHEREAS, John graduated from New Plymouth High School and
attended Boise State University, where he studied communications and
public relations and eventually became news director at the student
radio station KBSU; and
WHEREAS, He continued his radio reporting career at KYET/KWBJ
Radio in Ontario, Oregon, KIDO Radio in Boise, Idaho, and KPQ Radio
in Wenatchee, Washington, where he met Representative Clyde Ballard;
and
WHEREAS, John met Debbie Herman from Payette, Idaho, in December
1980. Their dates often ended with John rushing to a news story, with
Debbie by his side as he went on the air remotely to report. Always
the editor, he even sent her love letters back with copy edits. Yet,
Debbie still married John in June 1982; and
WHEREAS, They went on to have three beautiful children – David,
Jason, and Julie. The Sattgast family has called Shelton home since
1994; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, with Representative Clyde Ballard's assistance,
John was hired as a public information officer for House Republican

Caucus Media Services in the Washington State House of
Representatives; and
WHEREAS, In 2011, he became broadcast coordinator for House
Republican Caucus Communications. Since then, John has produced more
than 4,000 radio stories and coordinated countless interviews with
radio stations for House Republican state representatives; and
WHEREAS, John has served as a public information officer for 63
House Republican state representatives, including four House
Republican leaders, and served while House Republicans were in the
majority, minority, and 49-49 tie; and
WHEREAS, He enjoys his extended family of past and present
coworkers and state lawmakers, and loves United States history,
patriotism, and country, jazz, and rock music; and
WHEREAS, During his time in the Washington State House of
Representatives, John has been active with the National Conference of
State Legislatures (NCSL), serving three terms as a board member of
the Legislative Information and Communications Staff. In 2023, he
received NCSL's Legislative Staff Achievement Award. In 2025, John's
service was profiled by the organization in a piece titled: He's Had
a 'Front-Row Seat' to Washington State History; and
WHEREAS, John has not only had a front-row seat to Washington
state history, but he has played an important role in sharing those
stories with the public for 35 years;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State House
of Representatives honor and celebrate John Michael Sattgast for his
dedicated service to the House Republican Caucus and, indeed, to the
people of the entire state of Washington.
