1     WHEREAS, John Michael Sattgast was born in Ontario, Oregon, to
2 Herman and Dorothy Sattgast, the youngest child in a blended family
3 with seven older siblings; and
4     WHEREAS, He moved to and grew up in the rural community of New
5 Plymouth, Idaho, where his father was a dairy farmer; and
6     WHEREAS, John graduated from New Plymouth High School and
7 attended Boise State University, where he studied communications and
8 public relations and eventually became news director at the student
9 radio station KBSU; and
10     WHEREAS, He continued his radio reporting career at KYET/KWBJ
11 Radio in Ontario, Oregon, KIDO Radio in Boise, Idaho, and KPQ Radio
12 in Wenatchee, Washington, where he met Representative Clyde Ballard;
13 and
14     WHEREAS, John met Debbie Herman from Payette, Idaho, in December
15 1980. Their dates often ended with John rushing to a news story, with
16 Debbie by his side as he went on the air remotely to report. Always
17 the editor, he even sent her love letters back with copy edits. Yet,
18 Debbie still married John in June 1982; and
19     WHEREAS, They went on to have three beautiful children – David,
20 Jason, and Julie. The Sattgast family has called Shelton home since
21 1994; and
22     WHEREAS, In 1991, with Representative Clyde Ballard's assistance,
23 John was hired as a public information officer for House Republican

1 Caucus   Media   Services   in   the   Washington   State   House    of
2 Representatives; and
3     WHEREAS, In 2011, he became broadcast coordinator for House
4 Republican Caucus Communications. Since then, John has produced more
5 than 4,000 radio stories and coordinated countless interviews with
6 radio stations for House Republican state representatives; and
7     WHEREAS, John has served as a public information officer for 63
8 House   Republican   state  representatives,   including  four    House
9 Republican leaders, and served while House Republicans were in the
10 majority, minority, and 49-49 tie; and
11     WHEREAS, He enjoys his extended family of past and present
12 coworkers and state lawmakers, and loves United States history,
13 patriotism, and country, jazz, and rock music; and
14     WHEREAS, During his time in the Washington State House of
15 Representatives, John has been active with the National Conference of
16 State Legislatures (NCSL), serving three terms as a board member of
17 the Legislative Information and Communications Staff. In 2023, he
18 received NCSL's Legislative Staff Achievement Award. In 2025, John's
19 service was profiled by the organization in a piece titled: He's Had
20 a 'Front-Row Seat' to Washington State History; and
21     WHEREAS, John has not only had a front-row seat to Washington
22 state history, but he has played an important role in sharing those
23 stories with the public for 35 years;
24     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State House
25 of Representatives honor and celebrate John Michael Sattgast for his
26 dedicated service to the House Republican Caucus and, indeed, to the
27 people of the entire state of Washington.
